The PEI allowable annual rent increase
Prince Edward Island sets a single allowable annual rent increase that applies to all rental units, heated or unheated, including mobile home sites.
For 2026 the allowable increase is 2%, effective 1 January 2026. For 2027 it is 2.1%, effective 1 January 2027.
The figure is set by the Director of Residential Tenancy under subsection 49(2) of the Residential Tenancy Act, based on written representations from landlords and tenants and on the year-over-year change in the all-items Consumer Price Index for PEI. Because it is a single province-wide figure rather than a formula applied building by building, it is one of the simpler rent rules in the country to work with.
Where PEI disputes are decided
The Office of the Director of Residential Rental Property, also known as the Residential Tenancy Office, resolves disputes between landlords and tenants and provides information on their rights and responsibilities.
Anyone dissatisfied with an order from the Rental Office can appeal to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission by filing a Notice of Appeal within the timeline set out in the Residential Tenancy Act, and providing a copy to every other party named in the Director's order.
